living at belsay exhibition

a contemporary approach to furnishing an historic house : 4 may – 25 october 1996, belsay hall, northumberland

In 1995 Paddy was awarded a Northern Arts Major Award to develop new work with diaphanous fabrics, the first of which wase shown in the Pillar Hall as part of Living at Belsay project at Belsay Hall, Northumberland, during the Year of the Visual Arts. Paddy’s response was to “reinstate” the statues standing there when the house was occupied. Two of the works were of Sir Charles Monck and Sir Arthur Middleton. Sir Charles Monck was an architect who built Belsay Hall in after returning from his Grand Tour honeymoon.  Sir Arthur Middleton was the grandson of Sir Charles and was responsible for developing the gardens. The other pieces are portraits of the gardens and the plants in them
